Wooden Time Fractions is a conceptual math material created at Alison's Montessori to aid children to make connections between fractions and an analog clock. The set includes a wooden circular frame with incremental markers for every minute, Roman numerals, and fractions pieces labeled using increments of time: two 30-minute parts, three 20-minute parts, four 15-minute parts, six 10-minute parts, and 12 5-minute parts. By associating fractions to time, children are able to truly understand concepts such as half past the hour, quarter to, and a quarter after. Learning about time and fractions together promotes math flexibility. Children are exposed to a different way to segment a circle (60 increments) since most likely, they will learn that a circle is segmented in either 360 parts (degrees) or 100 parts (percentage).
Learning Skills:
- time telling skills
-
learn how many fractional parts form one hour
-
learn equivanlencies using fractions parts based on an analog clock (30 min. = 15 min.+15 min.)
-
learn Roman numerals from I to XII
