Sentence Analysis for Upper Elementary
The complex analysis of sentences is introduced after the student has had practice and is comfortable with analyzing the grammatical structure of a sentence. The sentence analysis work presented here focuses on different adverbials and consists of various steps and exercises included to help the student understand the concept of analyzing sentences. This product includes an instructional guide, a blackline master, and prepared sentence strips. 1. Prepared Sentence Strips (black line masters): There are nine sets of sentence strips that use the different complex adverbials included on Chart 2 of the Sentence Analysis set (L16). These complex sentences are meant for the student who has had previous practice and demonstrates a clear understanding of analyzing sentences. These sentences should be photocopied and used as many times as needed. Set 1: Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Adverbial: Source (from whom? from what?) Set 2: Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Adverbial: Cause or Reason (why?) Set 3: Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Adverbial: Purpose (what for?) Set 4: Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Adverbial: Accompaniment (with whom? with what?) Set 5: Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Adverbial: Instrument (by means of whom? by means of what?) Set 6: Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Adverbial: Agent (by whom? by what?) Set 7: Subject, Predicate, and Predicate Adjective Set 8: Subject, Predicate, and Subject Nominative Set 9: Complex Sentence Analysis: Combined Skill 2. Sentence Analysis Workbooks (black line masters): These workbooks are to be used along with the other components of the sentence analysis. They can also be used as a free standing workbook by the student. 3. Workbook A is used to record the answers to the questions that students will be asked when performing the reading analysis of different sentences (What is the action? Whom or what did the action? Whom or what was the action done to? By means of whom or what?). 4. Workbook B is used to record the answers to the questions that students will be asked when performing the logical analysis of different sentences (What is the predicate? What is the subject? What is the direct object? What is the adverbial?) 5. Prepared Sentence Cards: Eight sets of prepared sentence cards have been included for the student to use. The sentence cards are to be used with workbooks A and B. These sentences may also be made into sentence strips and symbolized by the student or recorded into a language journal or notebook.* 6. Prepared Reading Analysis Cards: Eight sets of reading analysis cards with sentences. The sentences used for the sentence strips have been repeated here. These cards are to be used by the student as a guide along with Workbook A.* 7. Sentence Construction Workbooks (black line masters): A set of eight workbooks where the student will be able to construct their own sentences. Each workbook contains ten pictures. 8. Prepared Logical Analysis Cards: Eight sets of logical analysis cards with sentences. The sentences used for the sentence strips have been repeated here. These cards are to be used by the student as a guide along with Workbook B.* *We recommend that these parts should be laminated for durability and longevity.
