Napier’s Board is quite marvelous! It uses binary numbers to perform multiplication with multi-digit multiplicands and multipliers. Children who have previous experience with the Multi-Base Bead Frame, will particularly appreciate how quickly the board converts a base ten number into base two (binary).

The Board itself contains peg holes, arranged in columns, and pegs to help us calculate. Along the bottom and right-hand sides are unlabeled holes, to allow us to convert base ten numbers into binary; if it has a peg in it, we read “1”, if it’s empty, we read “0”. In the labeled section, the bottom right corner is “1”. Moving up from 1, the numbers double up to 128 in the top right-hand column. Moving to the left from 1, the numbers double in this row, moving right to left, all the way to 32,768 in the bottom left corner. This doubling when you move up a column or to the left in a row, fills out the rest of our board. A depository well for pegs is at the very bottom for convenience.

The set of task cards consists of 52 cards divided into five sections. Each card contains a control for errors on the back. The cards should be used with the help of an adult with non-readers. You will love working with our task cards and see the positive impact that they have on your learners! It also includes a lesson plan.
