The Montessori Large Bead Frame (6+) is an augmented version of the Small Bead Frame. The Large Bead Frame is not a classic abacus as many might think! It consists of 7 wires filled with 10 color-coded beads to represent the decimal system with place values (green-units, blue-tenths, red-hundreds) and a hierarchy of numbers (simple, thousands, millions...).
The Large Bead Frame provides a framework for children to work within numbers up to 9,999,999 using addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Children are presented with an equation, which they represent on the Large Bead Frame by sliding beads from left to right, and moving downward when exchanging or reaching the next category.
Our Large Bead Frame Activity Cards are perfect to encourage children to practice independently, and confidently as they contain a visual control for errors on the back. There are 20 addition, 20 subtraction, and 14 multiplication equations designed in a scaffolded manner, leading to competency.
